Tools for Installing Wallpaper

Having the right tools makes wallpaper installation smooth, efficient, and - dare we say - fun. Most of these items can be found online or at your local hardware or paint store, and some you might already have at home. Note that you don't necessarily need all these tools, some are more nice to have than need to have. 

Tools for our Premium and Premium Textured Wallpaper

For a seamless installation using the paste-the-wall method, gather the following:

Wallpaper paste – Look for “paste-the-wall” or “non-woven” adhesive, often sold as a powder to be mixed with water. A brand we often recommend is Roman. 

Brush or roller – Used to quickly and evenly apply the adhesive directly to the wall

Sharp utility knife – A wallpaper knife with a snap-off blade is best for cutting strips and trimming edges

Straight edge – Helpful for achieving precise, straight cuts

Bucket of clean water & sponge/microfiber cloth – To wipe away excess paste and keep things tidy

Plumb line or spirit level – Can help ensure your first strip is perfectly straight

Plastic smoother or wallpaper brush – Helps eliminate air bubbles and ensures proper adhesion

Tape measure – Because precision is key

Pencil – For marking placement and making light notes on the wall

Step ladder or sturdy platform – To comfortably reach the top of your wall

Tools for Peel & Stick Wallpaper

Peel & Stick wallpaper requires fewer tools but still benefits from proper preparation. Here’s what you’ll need:

Sharp utility knife – Essential for cutting and trimming edges cleanly

Straight edge – Helps ensure perfectly straight cuts

Plumb line or spirit level – Can help guarantee a straight starting point

Plastic smoother or wallpaper brush – To smooth out air pockets and secure the wallpaper to the wall

Tape measure – Because accurate measurements make all the difference

Pencil – For marking guide points before application

Step ladder or sturdy platform – To comfortably reach the highest parts of your wall
